It is often food that keeps me from enjoying a good meal, and conversely, it is watches that keep me from eating a big meal. I was delighted to be invited to Bonhams for a lunch to preview the highlights of their upcoming Fine Wristwatches Sale at their New Bond Street salesroom. Jonathan Darracott, Global Head of Watches at Bonhams London Watch, was also in attendance. The new Bonhams restaurant Emilia served us delicious Italian food, inspired by Emilia-Romagna. The highlights of the sale were scattered amongst wine glasses at the table. There were some amazing watches from a variety of brands including Patek Philippe, Rolex and many more. These Fine Wristwatches sales are now firmly on the annual watch calendar and have very much become a stop-off for the nomadic watch collector/dealer/enthusiast clan who move from time zone to time zone attending auctions and fairs. Now, I will excuse myself from my table and show you some of the best items from the auction.
Lot 108 - Cartier Baignoire Maxi
In recent years, early Cartier watches are among the most sought after pieces. It has helped that rare and interesting pieces have been seen on the wrists and hands of tastemakers in the horological world, such as Auro Montanari (Panerai Replica) and Eric Ku. What is the most sought after? Cartier London pieces from 1966 to the mid-1970s are the most sought after, including Lot 108 at this Bonhams auction. The 18k yellow-gold large Baignoire was my first choice. Its curve literally hugged my arm. This watch has the original folding clasp. These watches are all handmade and they are beautiful. The Cartier London pieces were produced under the direction of Jacques Cartier. His initials are visible on the London-hallmarked watch cases, as on this lot. The blued steel hands and 'exploding Roman numerals' are timeless. This London watch is set in a stylish setting.
Lot 51 - Heuer Skipper
Bonhams is announcing that the Heuer Skipper will be a staple of summer. It will be interesting to see if this model performs better than last year's PS81k for the same model. The ocean-blue dial, accented with faded orange and mint, is a true summer classic. It's a watch you can wear and enjoy. These watches, which take their color scheme from the 1967 America's Cup winning Intrepid, are extremely rare. Only around 20 examples have been documented. It's also a nice size, measuring 36mm. The condition isn't as good as last year, but I know this old salt will be a hammer next week.
Lot 43 - Panerai Replica 5101P
It was at a wonderful lunch with David Duggan that I first tried on the Patek 5101P. It was not just any Patek 5101P. This piece, commissioned by Eric Clapton, or Eric Patrick Clapton, as the initials EPC on the caseback stand for, was unique. The 5101 is a lot like the Cartier Baignoire in that it sits comfortably on the wrist. Its stepped sides add to its impressive presence. Lot 43 features one of my favorite dial combinations, salmon with Breguet numerals. The tourbillon manual wind movement has a 10-day power reserve and an indicator below 12 o’clock. The piece is understated, despite the fact that it has two features of such importance.Replica Rolex Cellini The original packaging and documentation are also included.
